GUNNISON, Colo. – Western Colorado University wrestling remained perfect in Paul Wright Gym this season with a 23-16 win over 7
th-ranked Colorado State University – Pueblo on Friday night. The Mountaineers won 6-of-10 bouts, earning bonus points in half those wins.
 
Western (12-4, 4-1 RMAC) won their 11
th straight dual in Paul Wright Gym and earned their fifth win this season over ranked opponents.
 
Trenton Piatt got the dual started for the Mountaineers on Friday night. Piatt won in sudden victory at 125 pounds, earning a takedown in the first overtime against CSU-Pueblo's Josiah Seaton to take an 8-6 win.
 
The Thunderwolves took their only lead of the dual following a win by major decision at 133 pounds.
 
That lead was short lived. In the following bout at 141 pounds, Western's 
Jason Hanenberg fell behind 2-0 after a quick takedown by P.T. Garcia. However, Hanenberg turned the tide with an escape and takedown to lead 3-2 entering the second period. Hanenberg held Garcia without a point for remainder of the match, taking a 10-2 major decision victory.
 
Diego Calderon gave the Mountaineers a 10-4 lead, winning at 149 pounds by 4-3 decision.
 
CSU-Pueblo earned three points back following an 8-7 decision win at 157 pounds. At the midway point of the dual, Western led by just three points 10-7.
 
At 165 pounds, Western's 
Hunter Mullin earned a 5-3 decision victory, holding CSU-Pueblo's Gavin Melendez without a takedown in the bout.
 
In the following match, top-ranked 
Brandon Supernaw went up against the Thunderwolves' Zane Zeman. Entering the third period, Supernaw led by just one point, 3-2. Supernaw proceeded to score 11 points in the final two minutes to take a 14-4 major decision victory to improve his season record to 15-0.
 
Fifth-ranked 
Konnor Schmidt solidified the dual victory for Western, with a second-period fall at 184 pounds.
 
Following Western's three straight wins, the Mountaineers led the Thunderwolves 23-7.
 
CSU-Pueblo would win the final two matches, but Western earned a 23-16 dual victory.
 
The Mountaineers host Adams State University on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym. It is the final home dual of the season for Western. The dual is an Operation Red Event and the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a free t-shirt. All Western faculty and staff will also receive free admission for Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night.
