MBB | Mountaineers eye tournament bid

GUNNISON, Colo. - Two games remain in the regular season for Western State Colorado University men's basketball. The Mountaineers are currently tied for the eighth and final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament spot with New Mexico Highlands University. Western will face the NMHU Cowboys on Tuesday night to break the tie. The Mountaineers will then face Colorado State University - Pueblo in the regular season finale.

The game against NMHU is slated to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's game against CSU-Pueblo begins at 7:30 p.m. Both games are on the road.

Western (11-15, 9-11 RMAC) will be looking to make the conference postseason tournament for the first time since 2012.

A win on Tuesday night over NMHU (14-12, 9-11 RMAC) would put the Mountaineers in sole possession of the eighth tournament spot.

However, Western has a chance to move all the way into the sixth seed with two wins and help from other teams.

Sitting ahead of the Mountaineers in seventh place is University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, with a 10-10 conference record. In sixth place is Black Hills State University with an 11-9 RMAC record.

To move past UCCS, the Mountaineers will need the Mountain Lions to lose both of their games this weekend, while defeating both NMHU and CSU-Pueblo.

Western will need the same from BHSU to earn the sixth seed. The Mountaineers defeated the Yellow Jackets earlier this season and hold the tie-breaker.

The Mountaineers enter the week on a two-game winning streak.

Leading the charge has been senior Ben Beauchamp. Beauchamp leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game, which ranks eighth best in the RMAC.

The NMHU Cowboys enter the week on a two-game losing streak.

NMHU's scoring leader is Jacob Holland. Holland is averaging 14.9 points per game.

Western fell to NMHU earlier in the season, 65-86.

The Cowboys will face Colorado Mesa University on Saturday night in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

CSU-Pueblo (11-15, 8-12 RMAC) won their last game, 100-78, over Colorado Christian University.

The Thunderwolves can still make the tournament with wins over Colorado Mesa University on Friday night and a win against Western on Saturday. CSU-Pueblo will also need a win by Western over NMHU on Tuesday.

CSU-Pueblo is led by Will Newman's 17 points per game.
