GUNNISON, Colo. – With the end of the semester looming, Western Women's Basketball has one more home stand this weekend before closing out the term on the road. On Friday, Western hosts Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 p.m. before turning their attention to University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
December in Gunnison means it's time to layer up and this weekend Western Women's Basketball asks that you embrace the sweater weather.
Western will be hosting a Sinkin' for Sweaters promotion where every made three-pointer by the Western women means two 'ugly sweater t-shirts' will go out to the crowd in honor of the holiday season. Â The Mountaineers are shooting 31% from three-point on the season so there should be t-shirts aplenty.
Fans are also encouraged to wear their own ugly sweaters to all games this weekend.
Now underway in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule, Western (2-1, 0-1 RMAC) looks to return to their winning ways.
Early in the season, Western has been coming out hot, outscoring their opponents in the first quarter. In the process, the Mountaineers are shooting consistently at 39% from the floor.
Ball movement has helped Western's offensive production as they average 10 assists on 20 made baskets per game.
Balance is the name of the game for the Western offensive as four players are currently averaging eight or more points on the season. Leading the way for Western,
Jessie Erickson is averaging 9.3 points per game while
Tammarrah Gothard and
Samantha Coleman follow just behind at 9.0 ppg. Gothard is also Western's leading rebounder at 6.7 per game.
Against Colorado School of Mines (3-3, 0-1 RMAC) Western sees a team with potent offensive production. On the season, Colorado Mines 71.2 for the fifth highest tally in the RMAC.
The Orediggers are also no slouch on defense as they sport a 6.5 margin – the fifth best in the conference.
With four players averaging in double-figures, the Orediggers are led by Denali Pinto at 15.3 points per game. Two of those players also factor among the top rebounders in the RMAC.
Saturday, Western plays a UCCS (1-4, 1-0 RMAC) squad looking to find their footing after a tough preseason schedule.
Last season, Western split two games with UCCS, taking a 74-62 win before falling 41-47 in a tight game second game.
Jae Ferrin leads UCCS with 10.3 points per game.
For those who cannot make it to Paul Wright Gym, both games will be broadcast live on Stretch Internet and live stats will be available. Both are available in the story links above.
