GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – What was supposed to be the Dual on the Diamond turned into a battle in Brownson Arena between Western State Colorado University wrestling and Colorado Mesa University. Back-to-back pins, a technical fall, a major decision and three decisions gave the Mountaineers a decisive 30-13 win over the Mavericks.

Trenton Piatt opened the night for the Mountaineers at 125 pounds. Piatt took a 2-0 lead into the third period before earning another takedown against CMU's Tim Romero. Piatt would end the match early with a pin over Romero, giving Western a 6-0 lead.

In his first career collegiate match, Western's 133-pounder,
Jody Sandoval quieted the Maverick crowd. Sandoval wasted little time, pinning CMU's Dylan Keeney in 1:56 seconds. The back-to-back pins gave the Mountaineers a 12-0 lead over their Western Slope foes.

CMU would get six points back at 141 pounds with a fall by Jared Johnshoy.

The Mountaineers would respond with a 15-5 major decision at 149 pounds by
Justin Chenoweth. Senior
Shawn Beiriger added another three for Western at 157 pounds with a 9-6 decision to make the score 19-6 in favor of the Mountaineers.

After CMU's Jason Buhr, ranked sixth at 165 pounds, won by major decision, Western's
Brandon Supernaw, ranked seventh at 174 pounds, earned a 21-4 technical fall in the third period, giving Western a 24-10 lead with three matches remaining.

Brendan Gonzales sealed the dual win for Western with a 9-2 decision, nearly pinning CMU's Bruno Nicoletti multiple times.

Western 197-pounder,
Ben Price equaled Gonzales with a 9-2 decision of his own.

The Mavericks would get three points back with a 4-3 decision at heavyweight, but the Mountaineers would prevail 30-13.

The Mountaineers will continue the season at the University of Nebraska Kearney Holiday Inn Open on Nov. 18.
