GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western State Colorado University women's basketball team returns to Grand Junction tomorrow to open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season. Western plays Colorado Mesa University with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
Western (3-3, 0-0 RMAC) returns to Grand Junction after the first weekend sweep for the program since the 2015 CMU Holiday Inn – Airport Thanksgiving Classic. Through the first six games of the season, the Mountaineers are off to their best start in recent memory. Excluding exhibition games, the last time the Mountaineers played to 3-3 through six games was the 2010-2011 season.
In the stretch, three young Mountaineers have been crucial to the team's success. Freshman
Katie Dalton,
Keelie Lawler, and
Jessie Erickson are all averaging at least eight points and four rebounds per game. With Dalton leading the way through the first four games of the season, teammate Lawler rose to the occasion this weekend with two double-digit scoring efforts to pace Western's sweep in the Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic.
Statistically, the Mountaineers are gaining an edge on the glass. Currently, Western is the third best offensive rebounding team in the RMAC gathering in 13.8 a game. Additionally, Western is tied for the second-best rebound tally on the season after their 55 rebound effort against Northern New Mexico College on Friday.
The Mountaineers will need more than a rebounding advantage against red-hot Colorado Mesa University (6-0, 0-0 RMAC) on Tuesday. After dropping two straight exhibition games to Division 1 opponents, the Mavericks have been on a tear winning six in a row. Outscoring their opponents by 15.5, Colorado Mesa boasts a hot-shooting offense that distributes the ball efficiently averaging 18 assists per game. Preseason All-RMAC selection Erin Reichle leads the Mavericks averaging 13.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.
