ANCHORAGE, Alaska. – The Western State Colorado University women's basketball team heads to the Last Frontier this weekend for two games in the Seawolf Hoops Classic. On Friday, Western plays the University of Alaska Fairbanks with tip set for 1:00 p.m. MST. On Saturday, Western faces the host and fourth ranked University of Alaska Anchorage at 3:45 p.m. MST.
Coming off their opening weekend of action at the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic, Western (0-2, 0-0 RMAC) looks for the first win of the season in Alaska. Two games into the season, the young Mountaineers have been led by freshman forward
Katie Dalton who is averaging 13 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Two other freshman,
Jessie Erickson and
Jadyn Kanzler, are averaging over 7 points a game for Western while Erickson also leads the team in rebounding with 6.5 per game.
The Mountaineers have made their presence felt in the lane scoring points-a-plenty in the paint while pulling down 36 rebounds per game. Second chance opportunities have been crucial for the Mountaineers who are shooting 32% on the season. Strong through three quarters, Western looks to clamp down their fourth quarter defense in Alaska.
In the Nanooks of Alaska Fairbanks (1-1, 0-0 GNAC), the Mountaineers face a team much like themselves. Graduating five starters after a 13-14 2016-17 campaign, the Nanooks were picked to finish tenth in the preseason GNAC poll. The Nanooks split a two-game stand with University of Hawaii Hilo to start the season. Alaska Fairbanks is led by Lexi Carpenter who is averaging 15.5 points on 30 minutes a game. Ashlie Blackburn brings it on the glass for the Nanooks with nine rebounds a game.
On Saturday versus Alaska Anchorage (3-0, 0-0) Western finds the fourth ranked team in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA DII Coaches' Poll. Last year, the Seawolves went all the way to the NCAA DII Championship game before falling to Ashland University. With five players back from last season, the Seawolves are picked to win the GNAC title and advance deep into the DII tournament. Center Hannah Wandersee leads the Seawolves after receiving week one GNAC Player of the Week honors.
