GUNNISON, Colo. – The Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University women's basketball are back on the road this weekend. The first stop on the road trip will be against New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico on Friday, before traveling north to play the conference leaders, No. 9 Colorado State University – Pueblo on Saturday.
The Mountaineers' game against the Cowgirls on Friday night is scheduled for 5 p.m. while Saturday's game at CSU-Pueblo will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Massari Arena.
Western (2-6, 1-3 RMAC) split last weekend's two matchups. The Mountaineers earned their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the year, defeating Adams State University on Friday night before falling to Fort Lewis College the following night in Gunnison.
Harlie Williams continues to lead Western in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game. The senior also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.5 boards per game.
The Mountaineers are currently in a six-way tie for ninth place in the conference.
One of those teams in the six-way tie is NMHU (2-5, 1-3 RMAC). The Cowgirls have lost their last four games after winning their conference opener against Adams State on Dec. 2. Western defeated NMHU in both matchups last season.
Kaylani Maiava leads NMHU in scoring. Maiava's 13.1 points per game scoring average is also fifth best in the conference.
CSU-Pueblo (10-0, 4-0 RMAC) is ranked ninth in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association Coaches' Poll. The Thunderwolves are undefeated to open the season, but will face the second place Colorado Mesa University (7-1, 4-0 RMAC) on Friday before hosting the Mountaineers on Saturday.
The last win for the Mountaineers over the Thunderwolves came on Feb. 27, 2010 in Paul Wright Gym. However, Western has not defeated CSU-Pueblo in Massari Arena since the 2000-01 season.
Tuileisu Anderson of CSU-Pueblo is the conference's leading scorer, averaging 20.2 points per game. As a team, the Thunderwolves lead the conference averaging 75.5 points per game.
