MBB | Western moves on to Westminster

GUNNISON – Less than a day after the miraculous shot that Western State Colorado University men's basketball player Will Duggan made has passed and the team is back in the gym looking forward to another opponent. Western will travel to Westminster College in Salt Lake City to take on the Griffins at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

With the early schedule, Western has taken the early lead in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) can pull even in overall win percentage with a win over the Griffins (0-2, 0-0 RMAC). Despite not having recorded a win this season, Westminster won three exhibition games this preseason and lost its last game in the last thirty seconds.

Ben Beauchamp continues to lead the Mountaineers with more than 15 points per game. The guard is shooting 35 percent from deep and 39 percent from the field. Beauchamp is also second on the team in minutes and has attempted nine more foul shots than his teammates.

Also for Western in the scoring department are Collin Smith and Duggan. Smith is averaging more than 13 points per game, while Duggan is averaging a little more than 10 per game. Smith has the most made shots on the team and is second with a shooting percentage more than 50 percent. Duggan leads the team with 18 assists.

Transfer Patrick Sniff has made a huge impact early for Western. He leads the team with 33 total boards, averaging more than six boards per game. He also is perfect from the foul line this season with 10 trips. Branden Cosby-Lee is another transfer that has helped on the boards with more than five per contest, and leads the team with a shooting percentage greater than 60 percent.

The deep ball has become a main feature to the Mountaineer offense, as nearly a third of the shots the team has attempted have come from beyond the arc. This has turned out well, as Western has two shooters making half or more of their deep shots. Brady Subart is 12 of 22 from deep with a .545 shooting percentage to lead the team. He is joined by James Willis and Duggan with a deep ball percentages greater than .400.

Western is averaging more than 82 points per game as a team and is shooting .380 from deep. The Mountaineers are outscoring opponents by an average of eight points, out rebounding  by a margin of seven boards per game, and are averaging five more assists per game.
