PUEBLO, Colo. - Western State Colorado University wrestling didn't waste much time earning their first dual victory of the season in 2016. The 17th ranked Mountaineer grapplers earned a 25-16 dual win over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Colorado State University - Pueblo in Western's first dual of the season on Thursday night.
Western (1-0, 1-0 RMAC) won 6-of-10 bouts in the dual, earning extra points in three of those matches.
"CSU-Pueblo has a very talented team," Western Head Coach
Miles Van Hee said. "It took a total team effort and the right attitude to walk away with the win."
CSU-Pueblo (0-1, 0-1 RMAC) earned the first win of the night at 174 pounds by decision, giving the ThunderWolves a 3-0 lead to start the dual. However, the Mountaineers would not be silenced as
Brandon Supernaw (RFr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) earned a takedown 4:34 into his 184-pound match. Supernaw would win by injury forfeit at that mark, putting Western ahead 6-3. The Mountaineers would never trail again.
In the following match, 197-pounder
Mick Dougharity (Jr., Damascus, Oregon) earned 15 unanswered points, earning a technical fall to extend Western's lead 11-3.
After
Ronald Wardleigh (Fr., Plain City, Utah) earned a 3-0 decision at 125 pounds,
Zach Shank (Jr., Olathe, Colorado) didn't waste any time in his match at 133 pounds. Shank earned a win by fall just 1:26 into his bout.
Western's No. 7 ranked wrestler in Division II at 141 pounds,
Corbin Bennetts (Sr., Buena Vista, Colorado) earned an 8-1 decision in his first match of the season.
In the final match of the night, Western's
Travis Bradford (So., Houston Texas), coming off a runner-up finish at the Midwest Classic, was up against seventh ranked Kyle Bateman at 165 pounds. Bradford earned the first and last takedown of the match, leading to an 8-4 decision for the Mountaineer.
"It was a great final win by
Travis Bradford at 165, redeeming an early loss in the season," Miles remarked. "Now we are looking forward to the Tracy Borah Duals."
Western will continue the dual season this Saturday at the 26th Annual Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, Colorado. For more info on the duals,
