GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University and Colorado School of Mines will renew the longest continual rivalry in the state on Saturday. The Mountaineers and Orediggers will meet for the 91st time at 12 p.m. on Marv Kay Stadium at Harry D. Campbell Field.
Western (3-6, 3-4 RMAC) holds a commanding 51-37-2 lead on the series record. In Golden, Colorado the Mountaineers have a 21-21-2 record. No. 21 CSM (7-2, 5-2 RMAC) has won the last eight straight games against Western, and have won the previous six in Golden. The last Western victory at CSM came in 2001 when the Mountaineers won 40-17.
The Mountaineers enter Saturday's game after having a three-game winning streak snapped by Fort Lewis College. The Mountaineers fell to the Skyhawks 24-39 at home last Saturday. With three conference wins, Western has matched last season's conference win total. The Mountaineers finished the 2014 season with a 4-7 overall record and an RMAC record of 3-6.
The Orediggers enter Saturday's game on a two game slide. CSM lost to No. 4 CSU-Pueblo 49-21 two weeks ago and fell to No. 16 Colorado Mesa University 31-17 last weekend. Those are the only two losses on the season for the Orediggers.
Western is led on offense by running back
Austin Ekeler (Jr., Eaton, Colorado). Ekeler is ranked first in Division II in all-purpose yards per game with 220.00 and third in rushing yards per game with 173.5. The junior running back is also ranked third in total rushing yards with 1,388 and fourth in scoring with 12.8 points per game.
On defense,
Jacob Bernhard (Sr., Fort Lupton, Colorado) leads the charge for the Mountaineers. Bernhard has recorded 14 or more tackles in every game played this season. He is currently averaging 15.9 tackles per game, which ranks second in Division II. His 7.3 solo tackles per game also ranks tied for fifth best in Division II.
CSM features the third best offense in Division II. The Orediggers' offense is led by quarterback Justin Dvorak. Despite sitting out last game, Dvorak leads Division II in points responsible for with 210.
