GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University football will play the final game of the 2015 season this Saturday against No. 21 Colorado Mesa University. It will also be the final game for 16 Western seniors. In honor of Veterans Day, all active and former military will receive free admission to Saturday's game with valid identification. Fans are also encouraged to bring canned food items to the game for Gunnison Country Food Pantry's Red Bucket Food Drive. In exchange for canned food items, fans will receive at 20oz tumbler, lip balm and 15 percent-off lodging for Western friends and family, all courtesy of Mountaineer Athletic Association Corporate Partner Holiday Inn Express & Suites. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Mountaineer Bowl.
Saturday's game will be the 41st meeting between Western (4-6, 4-4 RMAC) and the CMU (8-2, 7-1 RMAC). The Mountaineers hold a 21-19 lead over the Mavericks. However, CMU has won the last 9-of-10 meetings. Western won the last home meeting against CMU in 2013 by a score of 31-7 and have an 11-9 record against the Mavericks in Mountaineer Bowl.
Western enters Saturday's game after having upsetting the 21st ranked Colorado School of Mines 45-42 on the road. The Mountaineers have won four of their last five games and reached their highest conference win total since 2003. Western has now matched their 2014 win total of four games.
The Mavericks enter Saturday's game after losing to CSU-Pueblo 51-20 on the road. CMU is now ranked 21st after suffering their only RMAC loss of the season. With a win and a CSU-Pueblo loss, the Mavericks would claim a share of the 2015 RMAC title.
The Gunnison Country Food Pantry's Red Bucket Food Drive helps feed those in need around the Gunnison Valley. Fans are encouraged to bring any of the following items to Saturday's game: dried pasta and spaghetti, peanut butter, jam and jelly, cereal, oatmeal, instant or regular, variety of canned beans, canned corn, tomatoes and vegetables, canned chicken or tomato soup, canned tuna, and canned chili. Non-perishable and perishable food can also be dropped off at Gunnison Country Food Pantry (GCFP) on Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm.
