GUNNISON, Colo. - After earning victories last weekend at home, the Western State Colorado University men's and women's basketball teams will embark on a two-game road trip this weekend. The Mountaineers will travel to UC-Colorado Springs on Friday before facing the ThunderWolves of Colorado State University - Pueblo on Saturday.
Western women's basketball (4-8, 3-5 RMAC) will face UC-Colorado Springs (11-2, 6-1 RMAC) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Both the men's and women's games against UC-Colorado Springs will be played at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium as a part of the Downtown Classic held by the Mountain Lions. The Mountain Lions are a half game out of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and enter the weekend coming off 66-69 win over CSU-Pueblo.
Friday will be the 38th meeting between the two programs. UCCS holds a 22-15 series lead over the Mountaineers.
UCCS' pair of scorers, Abby Kirchoff and Brittany Hernandez, lead the RMAC in scoring, averaging 21.7 and 19.5 points per game, respectively.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers will face CSU-Pueblo (7-4, 5-2 RMAC) at 5:30 p.m. in Massari Arena. It will mark the 62nd meeting between the two programs. CSU-Pueblo holds a 35-26 lead in the series.
The ThunderWolves are currently ranked fourth in the RMAC and are led by Ashley Piper. Piper is averaging 15.2 points per game for CSU-Pueblo, which ranks fifth best in the conference.
CSU-Pueblo is on a two game losing streak after falling to New Mexico Highlands University and UCCS.
Western heads into the weekend after defeating Colorado School of Mines last Friday night, and losing to Colorado Christian University last Saturday. The Mountaineers are currently tied for ninth place in the RMAC.
Jade McIntosh (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) leads Western's offensive attack averaging 15 points per game, which ranks seventh best in the RMAC.
Western men's basketball (3-9, 2-6 RMAC) will go up against the second ranked UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (13-0, 7-0 RMAC) following the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m. The men's game will also be played at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium Friday night. The undefeated Mountain Lions sit atop the RMAC standings with a 7-0 conference record. UCCS defeated CSU-Pueblo 101-81 at home last weekend.
Western and UCCS will meet for the 36th time in program history. The Mountaineers cling to an 18-17 series lead, but haven't defeated the Mountain Lions since the 2010-11 season.
The Mountaineer defense will attempt to slow down the RMAC's second leading scorer on Friday night, Derrick White. White is averaging 24.5 points per game for UCCS.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers travel to Pueblo, Colorado for another RMAC matchup against CSU-Pueblo (8-5, 4-3 RMAC) in Massari Arena. The ThunderWolves are tied for sixth in the conference standings heading into the weekend.
The contest will mark the 87th meeting between the Mountaineers and ThunderWolves. CSU-Pueblo holds a 61-25 lead and won last year's matchup 80-74 in Gunnison.
The ThunderWolves leading scorer is Tyrone Marshall, who is averaging 13.8 points per game.
Before losing to UCCS last weekend, CSU-Pueblo was on a three-game winning streak.
After defeating Colorado Christian University 81-77 last Saturday, the Mountaineers will look to pickup a pair of road wins. Western currently sits tied for 10th place in the RMAC.
Western's leading scorer,
Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, California), is the conference's fifth leading scorer, averaging 19.6 points per game. Biddle has also scored 109 points from the free throw line, more than any other NCAA Division II player.
