GOLDEN, Colo. The path to men's wrestling nationals runs through Lockridge Arena as 24th-ranked Western Colorado heads to Saturday's NCAA Division II Super Region VI Championships, hosted by Colorado School of Mines.
In each of the six regional championships across the country, the top three finishers in the 10 weight classes punch tickets to the DII championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., on March 13-14.
Western has a pair of Mountaineers entering the regional who are nationally ranked.
Devin Gomez is ranked sixth at 125 pounds in the Feb. 19 National Wrestling Coaches Association release. Within that ranking list are one other wrestler in the region at No. 2 and another at No. 7.
At 157,
Vincent Cabral is No. 12 in the rankings, which includes three from the region who are ranked above him.
In other weights and within the region,
Zachary Bates will battle at 133 where the NWCA rankings show three others within the top 15.
Tino Gonzales is at 141 where just two in the rankings will be at the regional, but those two are ranked Nos. 1 and 2.
Eyan Chavez will be at 149 for Western, in a bracket that has one wrestler in the NWCA top 15, while
Jacob Blandford is at 165 for the Mountaineers with the Nos. 6 and 8 NWCA-ranked wrestlers.
At 174, Western puts
Hunter Richardson in a bracket with just the sixth-ranked wrestler from the NWCA rankings, and at 184 it will be
Gabriel Cox for the Mountaineers with the Nos. 3 and 4 ranked opponents with him.
Sage Harrison will be at 197 for Western in a tough bracket with three from the NWCA top 15 in the bracket, while
Riley Butt is at 285 for Western with the top-ranked and 14th-ranked wrestlers from the NWCA list.
The Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 10-5 duals record that included a 4-2 mark against RMAC competition. Their last three duals were against top-25 opponents but Western came away with victories against No. 17 Chadron State (20-18) and No. 22 Colorado Mesa (26-18).
