Harris Captures Individual Title at Open

GUNNISON, Colo.  Miles Harris recorded three pins on the day, including in the championship bout, on his way to capturing the 157-pound bracket Friday at the Western Colorado Open in the Mountaineer Field House.

In addition to Harris' title, Mountaineer wrestlers Tino Gonzales at 149 pounds and Josiah Aldinger at 285 earned second-place finishes for Western.

Harris had an opening round bye then advanced out of the second round with a second period pin, recording the fall after a reversal while trailing 7-1 in the match.

His quarterfinal victory required no rally, as he dominated from the outset, leading 11-0 after the first period and recording a takedown and fall 24 seconds into the second period.

Harris had to battle in the semifinal eventually winning a 7-3 decision, which moved him into the championship match against Joshua Fish of the University of Northern Colorado.

Fish recorded the only takedown in the opening period and led 3-1 heading into the second. Harris surrendered an early escape to Fish in the second but began to dominate the match afterward, recording a takedown in the second and then early in the third period.

He piled up riding time over Fish, who at one point was given a stall warning, until finally, with 38 seconds remaining, he had Fish on his back and with a slap of the mat by the referee, Harris became the champion of the bracket.

Gonzalez made it to the championship bout of the 149 bracket but surrendered a technical fall to Lincoln Gregersen from Air Force.

Aldinger competed in a round robin style bracket winning three matches with pins and dropping a match only to the eventual bracket champion.

In addition to Harris, Gonzales and Aldinger, other Mountaineers earning placements were fourth-place finishers Quinn Brown (157) and Dante Pallone (197), and fifth-place finishers Caiden Beagley (141) and Jackson Hallett (197).
