GOLDEN, Colo. Western Colorado track & field's split squad centered around the Kit Mayer Classic on Friday, while those at the Jo Meaker Classic geared up for their Saturday events.Â
The Mountaineers sent a small group to Canyon, Texas, for the Meaker Classic, while over 60 members of the squad headed to Colorado School of Mines for its two-day Classic.Â
Western's
Logan Butterfield and
Rylee Blanton each finished within the top 12 of their hammer throw events. Butterfield placed 11th in the men's hammer with a throw of 53.70 meters (176 feet-2 inches), and Blanton was 12th in the women's event after a best throw of 48.97m (160-8).Â
Early in the event schedule it was
Ethan VanMeter earning a top-10 finish in the men's javelin throw. VanMeter posted a career best of 40.59m (133-2) to earn seventh place in the event.Â
Western's highest finish of the day came from
Emma Alford in the women's triple jump. Her sixth-place leap of 11.36m (37-3.25) came on the fourth of her sixth attempts.Â
Sophie Varela and
Aaleiah Porter-Gyll added top 15 finishes for the Mountaineers in the women's pole vault. They both cleared a height of 3.12m (10-2.75), with Varela doing so on her first attempt to finish in 11th place and Porter-Gyll clearing the bar on her third attempt to earn 14th place.Â
In an event that spans both days of the Kit Mayer,
Lindsey Osterfelt and
Kendall Morrison will head into the final three events (of seven) of the women's heptathlon on Saturday in eighth and ninth place.Â
On the track, Western's
Aidan Scott and
Ari Gardner competed in the final event of Friday's schedule, as Scott placed 20th in the men's 10,000m run with a time of 33 minutes, 34.52 seconds and Gardner finished in 25th with a time of 34:36.15.Â
Saturday's Kit Mayer schedule begins at 10 a.m. with field events and at 12 p.m. with events on the track.Â
Mountaineer's attending the Jo Meaker Classic kick Saturday off with the women's high jump at 10 a.m. MT and with the 4x100m relays on the track at 1:30 p.m. MT.
