GOLDEN, Colo. Mountaineer wrestling closed out its regular season schedule on Sunday after competing at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open at Colorado School of Mines.
The postseason lurks just ahead, but on Sunday Western Colorado's rookies and reserves tried to make the most of their final bouts of the season.
Top-4 finishes were achieved by
Noah Gurule,
Grayson Williams,
Ryan Dirksen Erik Anderson and
Tyson Irby-Brownson.
Gurule finished in fourth place in the 125-pound bracket, dropping his final match in the 3rd/4th place match.
In the 149 bracket, Williams rolled into a semifinal match after scoring a first-round decision followed by a pin, a technical fall, and another pin. He lost that semifinal but bounced back with a first-period fall to earn third place in the bracket.
Dirksen started his route through the 165 bracket with a decision and then a second-period pin. A semifinal 11-6 loss diverted that rout into the 3rd/4th match where he earned third place when his opponent was disqualified.
Anderson advanced into the semifinals at 174, but dropped that match (15-9) and finished in fourth place upon ending up on the wrong side of a major in the 3rd/4th bout.
Western's highest finisher was Irby-Brownson in the 285 bracket. After a first-round bye, he pinned his opponent in the second period then earned a 9-5 decision in the semifinal. Air Force's Soren Herzog took the championship match, though, but Irby-Brownson would complete the Open as Western's lone finalist.
Beyond those reaching the 3rd/4th place matches were
Cole Rogers who placed sixth in the 125 bracket;
Chase Engelhardt who placed eighth in the 157 bracket;
Hunter Richardson's sixth place at 184; and
Dante Pallone's sixth place at 285.
