Schmidt Leads Mountaineers to 12-point Win Over Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Ivey Schmidt scored a career-high 28 to lead the Mountaineers to a 72-60 win over Westminster Thursday night, while recording her second double double of the season as she collected 10 rebounds as well. The Mountaineers outscored the Griffins in every quarter besides the third where each team scored 11-points.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Griffins opened the second half with a 7-point run, but Western Colorado scored 11-points in the quarter including a buzzer beater from Rachel Novak to give them a 49-47 lead going into the fourth quarter.  
  • Western Colorado opened the final frame going on a 9-0 run which was started by a 3-pointer by Jayda Maves to put her team up 52-49. The Mountaineers had an 11-point lead as Ivey Schmidt hit her second 3-pointer of the night with 4 minutes, 13 seconds left in the contest.  
  • The Mountaineers opened the flood gates in the fourth quarter outscoring Westminster 23-13 and held the lead the entire quarter. Western Colorado shot 46% from the field in the fourth which was its second highest shooting percentage of the night.  
  • In the first half the Mountaineers had a one-point advantage going into the second quarter but shooting 63% from the field for 23-points gave them a two-point lead going into the half with Schmidt breaking the 36-36 tie with 32 seconds on the clock.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Not only did Schmidt register a personal-best in points with 28, but she also dished out a season-best 5 assists. Schmidt's 28 points came off going 10-for-16 from the field and 6-for-8 from the field along with 2 3-pointers. The sophomore's double double came with 10 rebounds including 8 defensive boards. Her 10 rebounds are also 1 shy of her season best 11 rebounds which occurred against Angelo State at the beginning of the season.  
  • Jayda Maves scored 15 points for the Mountaineers going 6-for-15 from the field. While Schmidt led Western Colorado with 10 rebounds, Brooklyn Seymour registered eight boards of her own with six of them coming defensively.

Western Colorado will conclude its season on Saturday, March 2, in Grand Junction, Colo., to face the Colorado Mesa Mavericks.
