HAYS, Kan. Western Colorado sent several of its reserves and redshirts to Gross Memorial Coliseum to compete in the Bob Smith Open, which was hosted by Fort Hays State University.
Advancing the furthest was Hunter Richardson in the 184-pound bracket.
Richardson moved through the first two rounds of the championship-side of the bracket with a major victory in his opener followed by a pin in the second round. His loss in the quarterfinals, however, moved him over to the consolation side of the bracket.
He was leading 12-3 in the second period of his first consols match when his opponent defaulted due to an injury. Richardson pinned his next opponent then won a decision to move on but ended his day in fourth place.
Chase Engelhardt was relegated to the consolation side of the 157 bracket in the third round, losing a decision in the third round after winning a decision in the second. He pinned his next opponent and won in overtime next before falling out of the bracket by technical fall.
Following the same path in the bracket was teammate Grayson Williams. He won by pin in the second round but was pushed over to the consolation side with a loss in the third round. He pinned his next two opponents but lost a narrow 4-2 decision that ended his stay.
Pratt Williams won by tech fall and a by pin to open his day before losing in the quarterfinals. He wrestled to a major decision in his first consolation match but lost by tech fall in his final match.
Zachery Flowers also won his first two matches but his day was over after losses in his ensuing two bouts.
