INDIANAPOLIS Â The 45th Midwest Classic opened Saturday morning at Nicoson Hall and Day 1 closed with a pair of Mountaineers heading into Day 2's quarterfinals round.Â
Western Colorado's Dean Noble and Cole Hernandez will begin Sunday morning's bouts against fellow ranked opponents in their respective weight divisions.Â
Noble, ranked No. 5 in the NWCA rankings at 149 pounds, started Saturday with a bye in the first round before advancing with a third period 22-4 technical fall at the 6:04 mark of the match.Â
He made quick work of his next opponent, moving on to the quarters with a first-period pin at 1:46.Â
Noble will take on seventh-ranked Wyatt Turnquist from Northern State (S.D.) in the championship bracket Sunday morning.Â
Ranked third nationally at 174 pounds, Hernandez marched through Saturday racking up a cumulative total of 62 points in just three matches. He earned a 14-2 major decision in his opening match, then added a 25-9 third-period tech fall followed by a 23-4 third-period tech fall to land a spot in the quarterfinals.Â
In that match Sunday morning Hernandez will square off with 13th-ranked Clint Morrisette from King (Tenn.) University.Â
Still alive in the consolation sides of their brackets are
Vincent Cabral (157) and eighth-ranked
Cole Gray (184).Â
Cabral lost his first match Saturday but bounced back with a tech fall and two decisions to stay in the bracket.Â
Gray earned a tech fall in the second round but was pushed across the bracket with a third-round defeat. In his first match in the consolation rounds he earned a first-period fall at the 2:21 mark to advance into Sunday.Â
MAT NOTESÂ
Roberto Estrada (125) finished his stay in the Classic with a 2-2 record, while Devin Gomez (133) exited with a 1-2 record.Â
Eyan Chavez (141) was bounced into the consolation bracket with a second-period defeat then won two in a row before dropping a decision to finish his Classic with a 3-2 record.Â
Walker Heckendorf (165) was 1-2 in his bracket,
Sage Harrison (197) was 3-2, and
Riley Butt dropped both of his matches at 285.Â
