Hernandez Caps Perfect Week with RMAC Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  Cole Hernandez went unbeaten in three matches Saturday at the 33rd Annual Tracy Borah Duals, disposing of all three opponents with first-period pins that pushed the Mountaineer redshirt-senior to Tuesday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week honor.

Ranked fourth nationally at 174 pounds in the December 22, 2023, National Wrestling Coaches Association's individual rankings, Hernandez upped his season record to 18-2 with the Duals' three victories.

His pin at the 2:28 mark of the Minot State University match broke Western free from a narrow lead, 13-12, over the Beavers in the Mountaineers' eventual 22-19 victory.

In the second match of the day, Hernandez went all the way to the 2:45 mark of the opening period before pinning his Simon Fraser opponent.

Hernandez' final match of the day went by much more quickly, though, as he finished off his Findlay (Ohio) opponent in just 55 seconds.

Western would record dominant victories against Simon Fraser and Findlay, shutting out the Red Leafs 46-0 and rolling to a 46-5 win over the Oilers.

Western's sweep of the Duals improved its season record to 5-2, and the RMAC win over Simon Fraser raised the Mountaineers' conference mark to 2-0.

Next up is a home match against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
