WBB Earns First Conference Win of Season

GUNNISON, Colo. The Mountaineers won their first conference game of the season and since February 2023 with a 65-56 win over New Mexico Highlands Saturday night. Western Colorado shot 37% from the field, but found massive success from three-point range making 57% of their shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Mountaineers were down 5-0 within the first three and half minutes of the game, but a pair of three-pointers by Rachel Cockman and Jayda Maves put them within a point of the Cowgirls after NMHU made a shot in the pain as well.  

  • Western Colorado then slowed the Cowgirl's offense as they scored just five more points in the first quarter. Western Colorado outscored the Cowgirls 21-12 in the first 10 minutes of the game, as Cockman scored led the team with 7 points in the quarter.  

  • Western Colorado went 4-for-16 from the field and 2-for-5 from beyond the arc in the second quarter leading the Cowgirls 32-3.  

  • The Cowgirls tied the game at 32 with a good free-throw coming out of halftime. The momentum shifted back to Western Colorado, by being able to hold NMHU to just six points in the third while the Mountaineers scored just 12 points in the third.  

  •  Even though they allowed the Cowgirls to score 19 points in the 4th quarter, the Mountaineers scored 21 more points to insure their first conference win of the season.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Jayda Maves and Rachel Cockman both registered 19 points in the Mountaineers' victory. Erika Lane also scored in double figures for the team with 11-points including going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Maves dominated the court going 7-for-15 from the field and 5-for-10 from 3-point range.  

  • Defensively, Brooklyn Seymour led the team with nine rebounds including five defensive boards. Seymour, Maves and Lane all finished the game with two steals apiece.

The Mountaineers will hit the road and take on Colorado School of Mines on Friday, January 26, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m., in Golden, Colo.
