Mountaineers Unable to Hold Off Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. Despite having a three-point lead going into the second quarter, Western Colorado fell to South Dakota Mines 73-62, who shot 56% from three-point range throughout the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Western Colorado got off to a strong start in the first ten minutes of the game outscoring South Dakota Mines 15-12, while shooting 37% from the field and 33% from three-point range.  

  • The Hardrockers took control in the second quarter with 24 points compared to the Mountaineers 13 points. South Dakota Mines dominated from the field shooting 66%, giving the Hardrockers an eight-point lead at the half.  

  • Western Colorado gained a little momentum coming out of the break with a jumper from Rachel Cockman tightening the lead to six points, but South Dakota Mines was able to respond quickly with a jumper of their own. Both teams traded shots throughout the quarter, but the Hardrockers finished the third with a 13-point lead after another three-point shot for Madelyn Heiser.  

  • The Mountaineers were able to put a good amount of pressure on the Hardrockers in the fourth quarter allowing them to outscore their opponent 16-14 including eight points from Cockman. Ivey Schmidt registered three defensive rebounds and one block in the final ten minutes. 

COURT NOTES 

  • Rachel Cockman led the Mountaineers with 15 points, shooting 6-for-16 from the field. Erika Lane and Ivey Schmidt registered 13 points each, while Jayda Maves was the fourth Mountaineer to score in double-digits with 10. The Mountaineers shot 38% from the field in the contest and 31% from three-point range.  

  • Erika Lane led the Mountaineers in rebounds with eight, followed by Cockman who recorded six rebounds throughout the night.

Western Colorado will now go to Spearfish, S.D., to face off against Black Hills State on Saturday, January 13 with tipoff slated for 4 p.m.
