Early Offensive Power by Yellow Jackets Lead to Mountaineers Loss

SPEARFISH, S.D. Ivey Schmidt led the Mountaineers with 16 points, including eight that came in the second quarter, but the Mountaineers closed their road trip falling to Black Hills State 60-45.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Black Hills State pulled away early in the first quarter scoring its first four points in the first two minutes of the game, before Rachel Cockman got Western on the board with a layup of her own. After a good 3-pointer from Kalla Bertram, Jayda Maves responded with back-to-back 3-pointers closing the Yellow Jackets lead to two points. BHSU went 10-for13 from the field in the first quarter, while the Mountaineers shot 36% from the field, which was their best shooting quarter of the night.  

  • Western scored just 10 points in the second half, including eight from Ivey Schmidt who could not be stopped for the final ten minutes of the half. The Mountaineers were down 35-22 going into the half.  

  • The Yellow Jackets pulled further away in the third quarter maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the frame and outscored Western 15-13. 

  • Both teams scored just ten points in the final quarter that saw the Yellow Jackets' largest lead of the night of 18-points. The Mountaineers did not score in the final five minutes of the contest but pulled back within 15 points.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Ivey Schmidt led the Mountaineers with 16 points, while Jayda Maves (13 points) and Alyssa Eckroth (10) also scored in double-digits for the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers' offensive unit shot just 30% from the field and 24% from 3-point range.  

  • Defensively, Rachel Cockman had seven rebounds with five defensive boards and registered two blocks as well. Erika Lane registered six rebounds and two steals. Schmidt also had a pair of steals for Western Colorado.

Western Colorado will return to Gunnison, Colo., to take on Colorado State University Pueblo, Friday, January 19, at 5 p.m. Then they will take on New Mexico Highlands January 20, at 3 p.m.
