Mountaineers Lead CC Classic With 1 Day to Go

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  The Western Colorado swimming and diving team closed out Day 2 of the Colorado College Classic on Saturday with a slim lead over the host Tigers, 570-552, at the top of the team leaderboard.

The Mountaineers picked up one first-place finish on the day from LynDea Turner, five second-place finishes, and used 18 championship-heat finishes in the swimming events to inch in front of the Tigers at Schlessman Natatorium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The morning preliminary heats saw 23 swims earn return trips to the evening's championship and consolation heat finals.
  • Turner's victory came in the 400-yard individual medley after posting the top time in the morning prelims. She maintained her spot at the front of the field in the championship heat, touching first in a time of 4 minutes, 53.28 seconds.
  • Joining Turner in that championship final were teammates Leah Wagner and Lauren Linneman. Wagner (5:02.89) was fourth and Linneman (5:08.58) was fifth as all three Mountaineers bettered their prelims times in the nighttime final.
  • Turner later added a seventh place in the 200 freestyle (2:04.60) and Wagner added a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.75).
  • Scoring the most points on the night for Western was Jordan Maruska who was second in the 200 free (2:00.07) and third in the 100 free (55.69). Just behind Maruska in both events was Makenna Lambert with a fourth in the 100 (56.41) and a third in the 200 (2:02.78).
  • Courtney Coplan was another runner-up for Western, taking second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.93) after earlier in the night adding a 15th-place finish in the 100 free (57.38).
  • The 200 butterfly included a second place from a Western swimmer. Anna Maurello (2:10.39) was second in the championship final by just 28/100ths of a second, while teammates Miranda Noonan (2:28.87) and Elisa Elsberry (2:32.78) added fourth and fifth places, respectively.
  • Three other Mountaineers scored in the 100 back with Coplan, beginning with fifth-place finisher Afton Page in a time of 1:02.56. In sixth was Tayla Liddle (1:03.82), and winning the consolation heat for a ninth place finish was Bella Gamez (1:05.01). Liddle also added an eighth place in the 200 free (2:06.04).
  • It was Addison O'Donnell just ahead of Wagner in the championship heat of the 100 breast, posting a second-place time of 1:09.68. And finishing fifth in the same heat was Trinity Caudle (1:11.64).
  • Consolation heat scorers from Western included Taylor Grebe in the 100 free (16th, 57.15), Emma Smith in the 200 free (14th, 2:09.10) and Sidney-Ann Morris also in the 200 free (2:11.33).
  • The initial points of the day came in between the swimming prelims and finals sessions as a trio of Mountaineer divers concluded the 1-meter diving final. Meredith Clabaugh was second with an 11-dive score of 331.20, with Alexandra Wallis finishing sixth (297.65) and Grebe taking 10th place (277.15).
  • The final event of the evening session was the 400 free relay. O'Donnell, Turner, Lambert and Maruska teamed up for a second-place time of 3:44.32, and the quartet of Coplan, Page, Smith and Grebe finished fourth with a time of 3:51.79. Lambert's split of 54.76 was the fastest of all swimmers in the event, and Maruska's anchor-leg split of 55.24 was third fastest.
EXTRA POINTS
  • Maruska's 48 points leads all swimmers at the Classic.
  • Turner's 33 points are ninth most, followed immediately by Lambert's and Wagner's 31 points.
