ALAMOSA, Colo. There's a sweep, and then there's what happened Saturday at Plachy Hall Pool as Western Colorado's women's swim team swept every event on their way to a victory over host Adams State University.
Western's day was so dominant that not only did it sweep every event, but also earned second place in each event.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers opened the meet by taking first and second place in the 200-yard medley relay. Head coach Vickie Fellows mixed her 'A' and 'B' relay personnel to maximize the results and it paid off handsomely.
- Returners Addison O'Donnell, Courtney Coplan, Trinity Caudle and Jordan Maruska were mixed in with newcomers Afton Page, Abigail Yalcin, Makenna Lambert and AvaMarie Hopewell with the pair of foursomes taking the top two spots less than one second apart.
- The initial individual event was captured by Yalcin, who won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2 minutes, 5.73 seconds. The victory would be the first of three for the freshman who would later win the 200 individual medley (2:20.98) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.12).
- Winning two events during the meet was another freshman as Lambert swept the sprint freestyles, taking the 50 free in 25.41 seconds, and then hitting the pad first in the 100 free with a time of 55.95.
- Other individual event winners were Coplan in the 100 backstroke (1:01.18), O'Donnell in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.85), and Hopewell in the 500 free (5:40.79).
- Hopewell would add a second place in the 100 fly and a fourth in the 100 breast.
- Maruska had a strong meet in the freestyle events, taking second in the 200 and 500, and touching third in the 100.
- Scoring a trio of second-place finishes for the Mountaineers was Tayla Liddle in the 100 back, 200 IM and 100 free.
- The final event on the schedule, the 200 free relay, was the final 1-2 sweep by two Mountaineer quartets. LynDea Turner, Coplan, Lambert and O'Donnell teamed up for the win in a time of 1:44.12, followed by the foursome of Emma Smith, Yalcin, Afton and Hopewell (1:47.61).
