THE ESSENTIALS
What: 2022 CSM Rookie Open
Location: Steinhauer Fieldhouse, Golden, Colo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lawson Hayman's Open did not start as he'd hoped as the redshirt-freshman dropped his opening bout of the 174-pound bracket in a 10-3 decision. His day turned around in the consolation bracket, though.
- Hayman posted a pair of major decisions, 14-2 and 10-2, to advance into the fifth/sixth-place match, in which he earned a first-period fall at the 2:46 mark to bring home a fifth-place finish.
- Sophomore Parker Gasser experienced the same fate in the opening round of the 184 bracket, but he, too, found success in the relegation bracket.
- A 20-5 technical fall advanced Gasser, who next took on teammate Pratt Williams. Gasser used an early takedown for an advantage that turned into a pin just 1:27 into the first period. The fall pushed Gasser into the fifth/sixth match but his day ended on the bottom of a first-period pin to finish in sixth place.
- Pratt originally earned an opening round win in the bracket, a 7-2 decision, before a 15-6 defeat moved him to the consolation side of the bracket with Gasser.
- Also winning first-round matches from Western were Maximus Brabson at 141 and Jacob Robbins at 157. Both would lose in the next round, though, Brabson by a riding time point, 9-8.
- Brabson would advance in the consolation bracket with two decisions and a major decision before dropping out one bout shy of the fifth/sixth-place match.
- Robbins picked up a fall in his first consolation match but would suffer the same fate with a third-period defeat in his next match.
- Another Mountaineer who found success in the consolation bracket was Noah Kasprowicz who registered a 15-0 technical fall in his first match on that side of the bracket, then added an 8-0 major decision to advance another round. His Open ended, 5-4, in his next bout.
