GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Western Colorado swimming sits in fourth place with 92 points after Wednesday's opening session of the four-day TYR/CMU Invite at Colorado Mesa University.
The Mountaineers earned a pair of seventh-place relay finishes sandwiched around four scorers in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle event.
The 200 medley relay quartet of
Courtney Coplan,
Addison O'Donnell,
Anna Maurello and
Makenna Lambert hit the pad in 1 minute, 49.19 seconds in the Invite's opening event, earning a seventh-place finish, just 0.19 seconds behind sixth place.
Adding points to the Mountaineer total from the event was the 'B' relay foursome of
Afton Page,
Trinity Caudle,
AvaMarie Hopewell and
Taylor Grebe which was eighth (1:50.25).
In the lone individual event of the evening, Western pushed four swimmers into scoring positions during the 1,000 free, led by Hopewell's eighth-place finishing time of 10:57.51.
Jordan Maruska (11:06.79) was close behind in 11th, followed by
Sidney-Ann Morris (11:46.76) in 14th and
Carolyn Goodwin (12:36.87) in 15th.
The final event of the session earned Western another seventh-place relay finish as O'Donnell,
LynDea Turner,
Tayla Liddle and Lambert combined for a 7:58.89 clocking.
Host Colorado Mesa leads after the first night with 207 points, followed by Colorado School of Mines (155 pts.), Northern Arizona University (139 pts.) and Western.
Day 2 of the Invite commences Thursday at 10 a.m. with preliminary heats of the 500 free, 200 individual medley and the 50 free. Thursday's finals session begins at 5 p.m. and also includes the 200 free relay timed final.
