WACO, Texas Senior Mountaineer
Will Lydle on Wednesday added another postseason honor to what is already a long list, adding a Division II All-American second team defensive selection from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
His AFCA selection adds to a postseason haul that includes D-II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-Super Region 4 defensive player of the year and first team honors, and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) defensive player of the year and first team honors.
A Gene Upshaw Award nominee, Lydle recorded 10.0 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss – totals that tied for the lead amongst RMAC defensive players – during a season in which Western Colorado earned a share of the RMAC regular season title and hosted an opening-round NCAA D-II playoff game.
Lydle's 21.0 career sacks is tied for second in program history, and his 36.5 career TFLs are seventh in the Mountaineer record book.
The 2021 postseason award cache was foreshadowed by his 2019 postseason – the most recent full season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that altered the 2020 (shortened Spring 2021) season – when he earned first team all-RMAC selection, a second team All-National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter (NFFCC) pick, and a third team Don Hansen Super Region Four honor.
