GUNNISON, Colo. – Past the halfway point in the season, Western Colorado University volleyball continues their home stand this weekend. On Friday, Western hosts Colorado Christian University at 7 p.m. before turning their attention to 24
th ranked Regis University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Western (1-14, 0-7 RMAC) continues the search for their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the 2018 season.
Fifteen games into the season, Western has played 49 sets. In that stretch, the Mountaineers have averaged 8.92 kills per set. Individually,
Kirsten Companik continues to lead the Mountaineers to those kills having amassed 94 on the season. In her own right, middle hitter
Kathleen Kasel has put down 90 kills on the season.
Distributing the ball for the Mountaineers,
Hanna Hendrickson maintains an average of 7.59 assists per set.
Defensively, Kasel and
Maddy Johnson lead Western at the net in blocking as both have recorded 26 blocks on the season.
On Friday against Colorado Christian University (6-10, 4-3 RMAC) finds the seventh-ranked team in the RMAC. Heading into the match, CCU is on a three-match win streak including a five set win over Chadron State College.
Western leads the all-time series with CCU 20-14, having won three of the last five match ups.
On the season, CCU has struggled in the first set before coming alive later in the match. Thus far, the Cougars have outscored all of their opponents in the second set.
Cali Bahnsen and Katie Henry lead a Cougar offense that is hitting .171 on the season.
Saturday afternoon, Western faces a stiff test from nationally ranked Regis University (10-6, 6-1 RMAC). Regis, the no. 24 team in NCAA DII, enters the weekend tied with Colorado Mesa University for third in the RMAC standings. Before arriving in Gunnison, Regis will square-off with CMU to break the tie in the RMAC standings.
On the season, Regis has played five nationally ranked opponents. Most recently, the Rangers dropped a five-set match against the fourth-ranked University of Nebraska Kearney. Prior to that, Regis had won seven straight matches. Regis leads the all-time series against Western 32-8.
Regis boasts a high-powered offensive attack led by Caitlyn Burroway and Nikki Kennedy who are among the best hitters in the RMAC. Setter, Silvia Basso is the statistical leader in the RMAC dishing out 11.33 assists per set – good enough for 14
th in NCAA DII.
