GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University hosted the annual Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite on a warm and sunny morning in Gunnison. But, it was more than just the temperature as the Mountaineers brought the heat as well. Both teams won the meet, including a perfect score of 15 points for the Western women.
A week after running a partial roster and falling to the top-ranked Adams State Grizzlies, Western put all of their varsity on the line at the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite. In the process, Western put their competitors on notice displaying a dominant pack for the first time in many years.
At the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite, four Western women hit the line hand-in-hand looking quite collected at 18:28.7.
Sophie Seward,
Alicja Konieczek,
Kennedy Rufener, and
Aneta Konieczek closed out the race together after running in formation for the whole affair.
Following a solid showing last weekend,
Cassidy Ahrens continued to progressing finishing fifth overall and in fifth position for Western in 18:42.1 to close out the scoring with the sweep and 15 point tally.
Showing massive improvement in a week's time,
Sarah Laverty finished seventh overall in 18:48.9 while new look Malindi Congour continued to impress as Western's seventh runner, finishing in 18:59 for 12
thplace.
In the men's race, Western saw a more competitive field as CSU-Pueblo and an incomplete Adams State squad entered the meet. But, the Thunderwolves would be no match for the Mountaineers as Western took the win 36-53.
For the second week in a row,
Taylor Stack led the Mountaineers to the line finishing second in 26:16.9.
Ross Husch finished next for the Mountaineers in 26:23.8, good enough for fourth overall.
Redshirt freshman,
Charlie Sweeney continued a streak of strong running capturing seventh place in 26:39.9.
Evan Sutherland would finish as Western's fourth-man for the second week in a row with a 26:59.8 clocking. For the first time this fall,
Juan Diaz found himself in scoring position for Western with a 27:26.7 effort which landed him in 18
th.
Following the effort, Western will focus on training for several weeks before running split squads at the Lewis University Conference Crossover and the Roadrunner Invite on October, 6.
