GUNNISON, Colo. – Following a win in South Dakota, Western Colorado Volleyball returns to their home court for two home matches this weekend. Western hosts Westminster College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. before turning to their attention to Dixie State University on Saturday.
On Saturday against Dixie State, Western will combine efforts with Gunnison High School to host a series of Pink Games in conjunction with Tough Enough to Wear Pink. As a result, the Mountaineer's matchup against the Trailblazers has shifted to 6:00 p.m.
In support of the Pink Game, admission to the Western match will be free of charge on Saturday. Donations supporting Tough Enough to Wear Pink will be accepted at the door.
The Gunnison High School Cowgirls will play three matches prior, highlighting volleyball in the valley. GHS' games will be at 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. culminating with the Varsity match at 2:00 p.m.
Before the start of the matches, GHS Student Leadership Council will be hosting a fundraiser lunch in the lobby outside of Paul Wright Gym. The meal will be community style for $5 with all proceeds going to Tough Enough To Wear Pink and GHS SLC to cover costs.
Western (2-17, 1-10 RMAC) will look to continue a win streak as they host Westminster College (6-13, 4-7 RMAC). I
n September, Westminster took a match at home over the Mountaineers 3-1.
Collectively, Westminster's offensive production falls in the middle of the conference ranks, but three Griffins factor into the RMAC leaders statistically. Audrey Green has the fourth-highest kills per set tally with 3.39 on the season. Teammate, Sydnee Simons has hit .317 while Aggie Roese-Olsen dishes 7.73 assists per set.
Saturday Western faces a Dixie State team (14-4, 9-2 RMAC) that sits third overall in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. The Trailblazers took their last match against Western 3-1.
A strong team at the net, Dixie State is one of the top hitting teams in the RMAC while a .215 season average. At the same time, the Trailblazers are holding their opponents to the second lowest hitting percentage (.128) in the conference.
Dixie State also leads the RMAC in blocks with an average of 3.08 per set.
Malary Marshall and Megan Treanor comprise an offensive tandem for Dixie State. Marshall hits .327 on the year while Treanor continues to average 3.17 kills per set.
