GUNNISON, Colo. – Western Colorado University broke a pool record in their first home meet of the season on Friday. The Mountaineers defeated Colorado State University – Pueblo 134-84 in the process.
Already the pool and school record holder in the women's 100-yard freestyle,
Randi Yarnell broke her own pool record on Friday. Yarnell finished the sprint in 53.38, breaking her previous pool record of 54.03.
Yarnell's finish was one of nine first place finishes by the Mountaineers in 13 total events.
Western started the meet with a bang.
Savannah Tice,
Alex Johnson,
Jordyn Richey and
Kali Stier joined forces for the 400-yard medley relay, and finished first with a time of 4:09.98.
The Mountaineers won the first 4-of-5 events. Following the 400-yard medley relay,
Sydney Skiles won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:25.06. Skiles would also go on to win the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:38.36.
Yarnell then glided to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.43.
In event five, the 200-yard individual medley, Western claimed the first four spots. Richey took first with a time of 2:22.83,
Jocelyn Jo placed second in 2:24.55,
Alex Johnson finished third in 2:26.14 and
Megan Walton placed fourth in 2:27.92.
Tice won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 59.74, while teammate Stier placed second in the event with a time of 1:02.18.
Johnson gave Western another win, finishing the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:11.49. Jo finished just behind Johnson in second place with a time of 1:12.64.
The Mountaineers ended the meet much like they started, edging the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Stier, Caroline Katzman,
Nina Crouch, and Yarnell combined for a time of 1:42.35 for the win.
Western will be back in the Paul Wright Gym Pool on Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. when they host Colorado Mesa University.
