DENVER, Colo. – With four matches left in the regular season, Western volleyball (2-21, RMAC 1-13) heads to the Front Range to play Metropolitan State University Denver on Friday at 7 p.m. and University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday at 5 p.m.
On the court, the Mountaineers will count of veteran leadership to challenge tough MSU-Denver and UCCS squads. For Western, the big kill threat of
Jordan Eatwell and the consistent hitting presence of
Taylor Ferrel will guide the Mountaineer attack. Last week, Eatwell surpassed the 1,000 career kills mark and she enters the weekend with 197 kills on the season. Ferrel's .221 hitting percentage from the middle offers an alternate attack for the Mountaineers.
Defensively,
Logan Franek grounds Western averaging 3.89 digs per set. She also leads the team at the service line with 36 service aces on the season. Additionally, Ferrel and
Kathleen Kasel have combined for 101 total blocks this season, making their presence known at the net.
In the Roadrunners of MSU-Denver (16-7, RMAC 13-2) Western faces the third best team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners enter the weekend on a three match win streak. Strong on the attack, MSU-Denver has a .235 hitting percentage while managing to hold their opponents to a .182. Statistically, Stephanie Laraway shoulders the load for the Roadrunners hitting .361 on the year.
On Saturday at UCCS (12-10, RMAC 9-5) the Mountaineers will see another efficient offense. The Mountain Lions have combined to average 13.61 kills per set off 12.82 assists per set. Like the Roadrunners, they are also holding their opponents under .200 in hitting percentage. Leading the kill threat for UCCS are the tandem of Taylor Hamilton and Alyssa Brinton who both average more than 3.5 kills per set, landing them amongst the best in the RMAC.
