GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western women's swimming and diving team swam their first dual of the weekend at #12 Colorado Mesa University tonight falling to the Mavericks, 197-65.
The Mountaineers won two events as
Randi Yarnell captured both the 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard freestyle events. In the fifth event of the night Yarnell took a half-second victory over Sierra Forbord of Colorado Mesa with a time of 1:55.16. Yarnell's second win on the night would come late in the meet as she came from behind to win the 100 yard freestyle off 26.52/27.03 splits.
Western also captured three runner-up finishes including an impressive effort from freshman
Savannah Tice in the 100 yard backstroke. Tice swam a season best 1:00.26 in what is rapidly becoming one of her stronger races. Additionally, Yarnell took second in the 50 yard freestyle with a 24.21 effort, narrowly losing to Megan Sirijariyavat by two-hundredths of a second. The Mountaineer 200 yard Medley Relay also came in second.
Jordyn Richey turned in a strong third-place effort in the 200 yard breaststroke with a clocking of 2:37.67. Teammate
Anna Kaiser also captured third in the 100 yard breaststroke leading Richey and
Alex Johnson as the Mountaineers went 3,4,5 turning in the best team race of the day.
After a quick turn-around, the Mountaineers return to the pool tomorrow morning as they host the Grizzlies of Adams State. The dual serves as Senior Day for Western and will include a pre-meet recognition before the first event goes off at 10:00 a.m.
