VB | Thunderwolves thwart Mountaineers in four

PUEBLO, Colo. – The match between Western State Colorado University volleyball and Colorado State University – Pueblo went four sets on Saturday afternoon. Each set could have gone to either team, but it was CSU-Pueblo that came away victors, 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 23-25, 23-25).

After going down 24-21 in the fourth set, Western (1-16, 0-8 RMAC) rallied off the next two points. Both were kills by Kathleen Kasel. The Mountaineers were just two points away from forcing a decisive fifth set. However, it was not in the cards for Western as CSU-Pueblo (3-13, 2-6 RMAC) took the set 25-23 and the match, 3-1.

Just a set prior, the Mountaineers were in a similar position needing two points to win, tied 23-23. Unfortunately for Western, two Mountaineer errors gave the Thunderwolves a 25-23 win in the third set.

The Mountaineers came away winners in the second set after a late 4-0 run put Western ahead 23-17. Western won the set 25-20, while hitting 37.5 percent. It was the highest hitting percentage by either team in any set throughout the match.

The first set was tightly contested until a four-point swing by CSU-Pueblo gave the Thunderwolves some breathing room at 16-11. CSU-Pueblo would fend-off the Mountaineer attackers to open the match with a 25-17 set victory.

Leading the Mountaineer attack was Jordan Eatwell with 12 kills. Eatwell was also tied for a match-high 14.5 points. Setter Hanna Hendrickson led all players with 33 assists.

CSU-Pueblo's Caitlin Broadwell led the match with 13 kills and tied Eatwell for the match lead in points with 14.5.

Western will continue the road trip next weekend, facing Colorado School of Mines on Friday in Golden, Colorado and the Colorado Christian University Cougars on Saturday in Lakewodd, Colorado.
