PUEBLO, Colo. – Western started their season with a win, putting forth a dominating effort to beat CSU-Pueblo 133-90.
In taking their first dual meet of the season, Western won 8 of 13 events to sink the CSU-Pueblo. The Mountaineers were particularly strong in the distance freestyle events scoring 47 of their 133 points over the 200, 500, and 1,000 yard freestyle events. In both the 500 and 1,000 yard freestyle events the Mountaineers swept the top three places.
Additionally, the Mountaineers posted another 15 point tally in the 100 yard breaststroke finishing 1
st, 2
nd, and 4
th. However, it was not only individual efforts that guided the Western women as the Mountaineers won both the 200 yard Medley Relay and also the 200 yard Freestyle Relay.
Leading the way for the Mountaineers were
Randi Yarnell and freshman
Sydney Skiles who both accumulated 18 points individually. In her debut for the Mountaineers, Skiles won both the 500 (5:28.65) and 1,000 yard (11:13.99) freestyle events. Yarnell also took two individual wins in the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.00) and 100 yard butterfly (59.85). Both Yarnell and Skiles were also members of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay.
Also making a splash for the Mountaineers were senior
Anna Kaiser and freshman
Savannah Tice. Kaiser came into the wall with a 1:12.05 winning effort in the 100 yard breaststroke, leading two more Mountaineers to scoring in the event. Kaiser was also second in the 1,000 yard freestyle with an 11:46.10. Making her collegiate debut, Tice may have found a new event focus, taking home 1
st place in the 100 yard backstroke with 1:01.65 effort. Tice also finished 3
rd in the 50 yard freestyle in 26.20.
At such an early stage in the season, the Mountaineers are primarily focused on race mechanics and look forward to drawing down times in the championship season.
