GUNNISON, Colo. – On senior night at Western State Colorado University the seniors led the Mountaineers to a dual victory against Chadron State College. Western won the dual 22-16 as the two seniors competing contributed nine of those points.
Â
No. 13 Western (8-3, 5-1 RMAC) got out to an early 3-0 lead against CSC (14-3, 4-2 RMAC) thanks to
Ronald Wardleigh (Jr., Plain City, Utah). Wardleigh, the NCAA Division II leader in falls began the dual with a 5-2 decision to put Western ahead 3-0.
Â
That lead was short lived as the Eagles would take a 4-3 lead heading into the 141 pound match. Senior
Corbin Bennetts (Gr., Buena Vista, Colorado) would make sure it was the last lead CSC would have in the dual as he earned a 9-2 decision to put the Mountaineers ahead 6-4 in the dual.
Â
In the next bout, senior
Tyler Adams (Sr., Santa Margarita, California) made the most of his last match in Paul Wright Gym adding a fall just 2:26 into his 149-pound match.
Â
Ian Steen (So., Graham, Washington) pushed the dual score to 15-4 in favor of the Mountaineers with a decision at 157 pounds.
Â
The Eagles would claw back into the dual with two wins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds, putting them within reach at 15-13. However, Western's
Brandon Supernaw (RFr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) added a 6-1 decision at 184 pounds to add some distance between the Mountaineers and CSC at 18-15.
Â
With the dual still on the line, Western's
Mick Dougharity (Jr., Damascus, Oregon) secured the win for the Mountaineers with a 10-1 major decision. The Mountaineers went into the final bout ahead 22-13.
Â
Despite losing the heavyweight match, Western earned their fifth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Dual 22-16.
Â
Western will have one final dual on Feb. 15 at New Mexico Highlands University before hosting the NCAA Division II Super IV Region Championships on Feb. 26 in the Mountaineer Field House.
