GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Just one week after concluding the indoor track and field season at the NCAA Division II Championships, the Western State Colorado University track and field squad opened the outdoor season at Colorado Mesa's Courtyard by Marriott Open, claiming 15 first-place finishes and having two athletes record NCAA provisional qualifying marks Friday.
Lindsey Yoast (Sr., Craig, Colo.) started out the outdoor season strong, posting a provisional qualifying mark of 51.96 meters (170-06) in the hammer throw to take first place honors. Yoast recorded the third-best mark in school history and improved her personal-best by almost 10 feet.
Also highlighting the day for the Mountaineers was
Heather Waite (Fr., Loveland, Colo.), who provisionally qualified for the second time this season in the pole vault. Waite had a memorable day, clearing a collegiate-best 3.71 meters (12-02) to take first. Waite, who recorded Western's second-best indoor mark in school history earlier this season with 3.60 meters (11-09.75), also recorded the second-best height in the outdoor record books Friday.
Several other Mountaineers also took home top honors on the field Friday.
Cameron Gill (R-Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) won the men's triple jump with 14.23 meters (46-08.25), while
Niki Hunt (So., Fruita, Colo.) was victorious in the women's long jump with a career-best leap of 5.07 meters (16-07.75).
In the throwing events,
Hannah Erickson (So., Woodland Park, Colo.) took first in the discus with a personal-best 41.12 meters (134-11), the ninth-best mark in program history.
Ryan Magnuson (Jr.,Greeley, Colo.) helped Western sweep the hammer throw with a first-place toss of 44.31 meters (145-04).
Tyra Cruz (So., Pueblo, Colo.) also finished at the top with a throw of 12.03 meters (39-05.75) in the shot put.
The Mountaineers were just as impressive on the track, sweeping the 100- and 200-meter races.
Kossi Tchenawou (Fr., Centennial, Colo.) won the 100 meters with a time of 10.84 while also taking the 200 meters in 21.87.
For the women,
Octavia McFadden (Fr., Fountain, Colo.) won the 100 meters with 12.41 while
Alexei Cox (Fr., Denver, Colo.) made her collegiate debut for the Mountaineers with a first-place finish in the 200 meters with 26.03.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of
Elijah Gilbert (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Justin Baker (Jr., Houston, Texas),
Casey Lewis (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) and Tchenawou matched the fifth-fastest time in program history with 41.56 to also claim first.
Anthony Erps (Jr., Canon City, Colo.) took home both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles titles for Western. Erps crossed the finish line with a personal-best 15.28 in the 110-meter hurdles while finishing in 55.20 in the 400-meter hurdles.
On the women's side,
Amanda Campbell (Fr., Westminster, Colo.) was the top finisher in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.17.
The Mountaineers will wrap up their first week of the outdoor season tomorrow with a handful of athletes competing.
Dawid Konieczek (So., Zsrit Powodowo, Poland),
Katie Weber (So., Fort Collins, Colo.),
Dominika Kaszuba (Jr., Wroclaw, Poland) and
Justine Podvin (Sr., Lille, France) will be in action at the UNLV Spring Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, while
Jake Caldwell (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) will compete at the CSU-Pueblo Open.
