GUNNISON, Colo. - No. 7 Western State Colorado University wrestling will close the 2014-15 dual season on Wednesday against Colorado School of Mines. The Mountaineers will host the Orediggers at 7 p.m. and send off five seniors, wrestling for the final time in Paul Wright Gym. Wednesday is also faculty appreciation night where the Mountaineer wrestlers will honor selected members of Western's faculty and staff.
The first 500 fans through the gate on Wednesday night, will also receive a free Mountaineer wrestling t-shirt.Western (10-2, 6-1 RMAC) will have five wrestlers making their final appearances as Mountaineers. Those five are
CJ York (Sr., Milliken, Colorado),
Elliot Copeland (Sr., Bennett, Colorado),
Kyle Piatt (Sr., Olathe, Colorado),
Sam Mangum (Sr., McAllen, Texas), and
Peter Anguiano (Sr., Elk Grove, California).
"I'm really excited to see our seniors last home dual," Head Coach
Miles Van Hee remarked. "We want to make sure we send them out in Western fashion."
In the past four seasons, those five Western seniors have helped Western win 76.9 percent (20-of-26) of duals in Paul Wright Gym and 71.4 percent (40-of-56) of all duals. They have helped Western earn one Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Dual Championship and one RMAC/Region IV Championship. Individually, they have earned four All-America honors and three RMAC titles, but will be looking to add to these totals in the upcoming weeks.
"This is a really special group of wrestlers," Van Hee said. "They are all tremendous leaders and I'm very proud of them."
Western will need to defeat CSM (2-5, 5-6 RMAC) Wednesday night to solidify second place in the RMAC standings. The Orediggers currently sit seventh in the conference standings.
The Mountaineers enter the dual ranked seventh in the Division II national standings. Three individual Mountaineers are ranked in the top eight of their respective weight classes. At 174 pounds, Copeland is ranked second, Piatt is ranked fourth at 184 pounds, and Mangum is ranked sixth at 197 pounds.
Following the dual against CSM, Western will compete at the NCAA Division II Region IV Championships on Feb. 27-28 in Pueblo, Colorado.
