FB | Mountaineers look to make it three straight

GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University football heads back on the road this week to face Western New Mexico University. After winning the previous two weekends, the Mountaineers will be looking to win their third straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. Kickoff from Ben Altamirano Field is at noon.

The Mountaineers (2-5, 2-3 RMAC) will travel to Silver City, New Mexico for the 23rd time in program history. Saturday's game will be the 40th meeting between the two programs. Western State holds a four game edge on the Mustangs, leading the series 21-17-1. However, WNMU (2-5, 1-4 RMAC) has won the past five straight against the Mountaineers. In Silver City, Western has an 11-10-1 record. The last Western win against WNMU on the road came in 2009 when the Mountaineers defeated the Mustangs 38-19.

After defeating Black Hills State University 62-23 on Oct. 10 and New Mexico Highlands University 56-7 last Saturday, the Mountaineers have won back-to-back games for the first time since 2009. That year Western won three-straight RMAC games, with wins over NMHU, WNMU and Fort Lewis College. Over the past two wins, Western has outscored their opponents 118-30. A total team effort, the Mountaineers received touchdowns from the offense, defense and special teams during the streak.

The Mustangs enter Saturday on a four game losing streak. WNMU fell to Colorado Mesa University last Saturday 52-26. The Mustangs' only two wins of the season both came at home.
