CHADRON, Neb. - No. 5 Western State Colorado University won eight of 10 matches Saturday against Chadron State College. The Mountaineers defeated the Eagles 35-6, earning bonus points in five matches.
Western (8-1, 4-0 RMAC) remained undefeated in conference duals and extend their conference dual winning streak to 11.
Trenton Piatt (Fr., Olathe, Colorado) got the dual started for Western by earning a fall 2:10 into his 215-pound match.
Zach Shank (So., Olathe, Colorado) followed at 133 pounds with a near flawless 11-0 major decision, putting Western ahead 10-0 after the first two matches.
After
Corbin Bennetts (Jr., Buena Vista, Colorado) earned a 3-0 decision at 141 pounds,
Ian Steen (So., Graham, Washington) recorded his eighth fall of the 2014-15 season for Western 4:18 into his 149-pound match. The Mountaineers picked up another three points at 157 pounds with a
Shawn Beiriger (RFr., Del Norte, Colorado) 7-4 decision. Up 22-0 after the first five matches, the Mountaineers had put a great distance between themselves and the Eagles.
However, CSC (7-7, 1-2 RMAC) got six points back, earning one decision at 165 pounds and another at 174 pounds. It would be the final points for Chadron in Saturday's dual.
Kyle Piatt (Sr., Olathe, Colorado) would get Western back on track with a 15-2 major decision at 184 pounds.
Sam Mangum (Sr., McAllen, Texas) would follow with a 7-1 decision at 197 pounds, and 285-pound wrestler
Peter Anguiano (Sr., Elk Grove, California) finished off the dual with a 4:37 fall for Western.
Western, the defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions, will face Colorado Mesa University, in what could possibly be this year's conference championship, next Thursday in Grand Junction, Colorado. Both the Mountaineers and Mavericks remain unbeaten in conference duals. Without a conference tournament, this season's conference champion will be the conference dual champion.
