Mountaineer Volleyball Fall Short in Five-Set Thriller

GUNNISON, Colo.  The Western Colorado volleyball team hosted Chadron State on Saturday night in a thrilling five-set battle. The Mountaineers and Eagles went back and forth throughout the match, with both teams battling until the final point before Chadron State ultimately came away with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers came out firing in the opening set, taking an early lead and maintaining control throughout the frame. Western's strong start helped the Mountaineers secure the first set 25-22.
  • Western carried that momentum into the second set, battling back late to take control and earn another 25-22 set victory. With a 2-0 lead, the Mountaineers found themselves one set away from securing the match.
  • Chadron State responded in the third set as both teams battled throughout. The Mountaineers came within striking distance of closing out the match, but the Eagles made a late push to take the third set by a narrow 25-23 margin.
  • Andrea Torres led the Mountaineers offensively with a team-high 16 kills, while Maggie Legg provided a strong performance with 15 kills on the night. Anuhea Ka'alele paced the Western offense with 27 assists, while Olivia Moore followed closely with 24 assists.
  • The fourth set was another back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to gain much separation early. Chadron State made a late run and pulled away to take the fourth set 25-20, forcing a decisive fifth set.
  • The fifth set was another tight battle, with both teams trading points down the stretch. Chadron State managed to make the final push, taking the fifth set 15-12 and completing the comeback to secure the match.
  • Defensively, Legg led the way for the Mountaineers with 17 digs. Galatia Andrew added 12 digs, while Makaelah Paulino contributed 11 digs as Western battled throughout the five-set match.
