Mountaineers Put the Clamps on Chadron State

GUNNISON, Colo.  Eighth-ranked Western Colorado played a dominant second half Saturday night as it finished off a 30-9 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over visiting Chadron State College.

The Mountaineer defense held the Eagles to 35 total yards in the second half while the Western offense racked up an additional 210 yards over the final 30 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was an inauspicious start from Western as Chadron forced a fumble on the Mountaineers' third snap of the opening drive, recovering the fumble and taking over at the Western 30 yard line. The Eagles drove to the 9 before the defense stiffened and allowed just a field goal.
  • The Mountaineers punted on their next two possessions before taking back the break they'd earlier given, with Treyton Marx getting a strip sack and fumble recover at the CSU 19. JT Miller ended up a four-play drive with a tying field goal late in the quarter.
  • A giveaway early in the second quarter led to another Eagle field goal, but late in the frame Easton Peterson returned a punt 49 yards to the CSC 21, setting up a quick drive that culminated in a Josiah Roy keeper around the left edge for a 10-yard touchdown gallop that put the Mountaineers ahead to stay.
  • Beginning with that Peterson punt return late in the second quarter, Western's defense forced the Eagles to punt on seven consecutive possessions, CSC only ending the streak after recovering a fumble in Western territory with under five minutes to play, but again settling for only a field goal.
  • Meanwhile, the Western offense had begun to click in that second quarter, extending the momentum into the second half during which it piled up more than 200 yards of offense that produced 17 points, none more exciting than Damien Nevil's 14-yard reception from Roy with Nevil finishing the catch and run with a hurdle over the final defender at the front left corner of the end zone.
MOJO TURF NOTES
  • Western held the Chadron offense to a total of 157 yards, including minus-two yards on the ground over the third and fourth quarters. All three of the Eagles' scoring drives began in Western territory, after Mountaineer turnovers, with the longest of those drives extending for just 38 yards.
  • The Mountaineers pounded away on the ground at the Eagle defense, with 36 rushing attempts, but found greater success through the air, as Roy threw for 326 yards and a pair of touchdowns, spreading the ball around to eight different receivers led by DJ Allen Jr.'s 106 yards on just 4 catches.
  • Linebackers Ian Loomis, Caden Campuzano and Kade Musser keyed the defensive dominance, combining for 19 tackles including one of Western's seven sacks by Loomis.
