24-point Run Tames Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  Eighth-ranked Western Colorado used dominant second and third quarters to score 24 unanswered points in Saturday night's 31-17 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over host Colorado Mesa University at Stocker Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mavericks led 10-7 after the first quarter, but Western began its scoring run from it's 17 yard line with 2:22 left in the quarter.
  • The drive consumed seven minutes on the clock and 83 yards, culminating in the second quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Josiah Roy to Caden Measner in the back of the end zone.
  • Late in the second quarter the Mountaineers engineered another drive after Jevon Young forced a fumble that was recovered by Trevor Monteleone at the Western 40.
  • Roy drove the offense down the field to the Mesa seven, where the Mountaineers settled for a 24-yard field goal from JT Miller to make the score 17-10 with 24 seconds remaining in the half.
  • Perhaps the biggest play of the night came on the ensuing kickoff, where Gabe Schubarth knocked the ball loose from the Mavs' kick returner with Jack Ward recovering it and returning it seven yards to the Mesa 3 yard line.
  • It took just one play from Roy to find paydirt again, connecting with Antwuan Jackson in the right corner of the end zone to extend the lead to 24-10 at the halftime break.
  • Western extended the lead late in the third quarter after a long punt return by Easton Peterson set up the Mountaineers at the CMU 32.
  • Lamonte James picked up every yard on the drive, finishing it with a 22-yard scamper around the left side, tip-toeing a few yards along the sideline before crossing the goal line for a 31-17 lead.
  • Mesa picked up a touchdown with five minutes remaining but that would be its last highlight of the evening in front of its home crowd.
TURF NOTES
  • The Mountaineer defense limited CMU to just 79 net yards rushing, while Western's ground attack pounded out 165 yards.
  • Damien Nevil led the rushing attack with 39 yards, and scored Western's first touchdown, while James totaled 37 yards, Roy chipped in with 31, Ramon Ruiz added 27 yards and Isaiah Jones rushed for 26 yards.
  • Western's dominant second and third quarters was evident by its commanding time of possession, owning the ball for 20 minutes, 35 seconds to just 9:22 for the Mavs.
  • Mesa's passing attack did some damage, with 233 yards through the air, pushing the Mavs on top in total yards of offense, 312-283, but the Mountaineers' two forced fumbles and fumble recoveries canceled out CMU's edge over the airwaves.
