GUNNISON, Colo. On the way to a 211-16 victory Saturday over visiting Adams State, Western Colorado swimming and diving set a pair of pool records at the Mountaineers' Senior Recognition Meet.
With the event schedule changed due to travel conditions and a late meet start, the 1,650-yard freestyle led off the morning at the Paul Wright Natatorium.
It was a good start for Western as not only did it post a 1-2 finish with
Morgan Nielsen and
Sidney-Ann Morris claiming the top two spots, but Nielsen broke the pool record with a winning time of 18 minutes, 35.27 seconds. Morris touched second in a time of 19:16.36.
After a break in the action while waiting for more meet officials to weather the weather and arrive at Western, the remainder of the event schedule commenced with the 200 medley relay kicking things off.
Cate Coffield,
Ella Fries,
Joanna Swiderska and
Anna Jorstad combined to out-touch the 'B' relay by a half second, the foursome touching first in a winning time of 1:51.29.
The Mountaineers would proceed to win every individual event, plus the 800 free relay in the middle of the event schedule as well as the 200 free relay at the end of the meet.
The 800 free relay was the second record-setting swim for the Mountaineers on the day as
Cate Coffield,
Agnieszka Rudomina,
Brionna Thomas and Nielsen raced to a winning and natatorium record time of 8:14.51.
Both
Leah Wagner and
Adessa Talbot were multiple event winners during the meet.
Wagner placed first I the 200 individual medley (IM) and the 200 breaststroke, and Talbot won both the 200 freestyle and the 400 IM.
Other individual event winners in the swim events include Rudomina in the 200 backstroke, Jorstad in the 50 free,
Sophia Del Rosario in the 500 free, Swiderska in the 100 free, and
Amayah Warren in the 200 butterfly.
Another individual event winner,
Alexandra Wallis, punched her ticket –for the third time in four seasons – to the NCAA Division II Diving Qualification Meet.
She already had the qualifying 6-dive optionals score for the 1-meter board and needed the 11-dive score to earn her way to the qualification meet.
Wallis posted her highest score of the season, 438.90, to easily surpass the qualifying score (420). She will participate in the qualification meet on March 10 at the site of the D2 national championship meet in Evansville, Ind.
