GUNNISON, Colo.  Mountaineer athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Demitrius Martin as the department's Assistant Men's Basketball Coach.

Men's Basketball's Head Coach, Zac Claus, said "We are excited to add Demitrius to our program.  He stood out in our search, and I expect him to positively impact things right away.  Demitrius will instantly help to raise the level of work that is done on the court with our players and in many other important areas."

He arrives on the Western Slope after working the previous four years at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa. He spent three years as an associate head coach and a year (2024-25) as interim head coach. Prior to Waldorf, he was a graduate assistant coach for a year at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.

Martin, who graduated from Waldorf in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, was named 2019 All-Conference Honorable Mention, 2020 All-Conference Team, and 2020 NAIA All-American. His senior year he averaged 22.5 points per game which landed him top 12 in the nation.

Martin crafted a well-rounded coaching tool kit at his Alma Mater. He led and managed all aspects of the program, served as recruiting coordinator, directed fundraising initiatives, developed practice plans, managed travel, and oversaw individual player development on and off the court.

Joining Martin is former player Amar Rivers. Rivers is from Auburn, Washington. His senior year at Western Colorado he earned a spot on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Honor Roll and led the Mountaineers in blocks with 17. He recorded 310 points, averaging 11.5ppg, 24 steals, 56 assists and 91 rebounds.

"Amar was one of the first young men that we recruited here, and he turned out to be a terrific player in a Mountaineer uniform.  It will be a big asset to have someone of his basketball smarts and pride in Western Colorado basketball to be assisting with the team."
