Mountaineers Fall to Skyhawks

Durango, Colo.,   The Western Colorado Men's Basketball team drops to RMAC opponent Fort Lewis College on Sunday afternoon by a score of 76-61.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Christian Still and sophomore Tyler Halligan gave WCU a quick 5-0 lead. FLC earned a chance at the charity stripe going 2-for-2. A missed bucket by WCU made it a one-point game 5-4. Halligan found Junior Andrew Reichart who finished around the rim 7-4.
  • The Skyhawks tied the game at 7-7 just before the first media timeout. The next few minutes saw lead changes and ties. With under ten minutes to play in the half, FLC earned their greatest lead 20-13.
  • WCU earned a few scores from the free throw line, but the Skyhawks elevated their edge 27-15. Senior Kade Juelfs hit a shot from behind the arch cutting the deficit 27-18. FLC responded, elevating their lead 30-18.
  • As time elapsed, the Mountaineers continued to fight. Juelfs, Reichart and Still added scores to make it a three-point game (31-28) going into halftime.
  • A Fort Lewis layup began the second half 33-28. Next WCU possession, Still finished around the rim 33-30. Another score for FLC but senior Amar Rivers knocked down two free throws, keeping it a three-point game 35-32. The Skyhawks missed a bucket resulting in Juelfs finishing on the other end 35-34.
  • During the subsequent minutes scores were had by the respective teams, FLC maintaining their lead but by no more than, at most, eight points. With under ten minutes to play WCU was down three 51-48.
  • With four minutes left, the Skyhawks took their largest lead 66-53. A three by Still made the score 66-56. FLC kept hitting shots, going up by fifteen to win the game 76-61.
 
COURT NOTES 
  • Juelfs led the Mountaineers with 20 points, going 7-14 from the field, 4-8 from three and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Still followed with 15, going 5-10 from the field, 3-5 from behind the arch and 2-2 from the free throw line. Rivers and Reichart each put up 8 and Halligan had 7.
  • Freshman Dawlton Grant and Halligan respectfully accumulated 3 assists. Rivers and Juelfs were granted 2.
  • Buckmon recorded 2 steals while Still and Halligan each had 1.
  • Reichart pulled down 7 boards, 1 offensive and 6 defensive. Rivers and Grant each grabbed 5.
  • WCU shot 38.9% from the field, 37.5% from three and 62.5% from the charity stripe. The Mountaineers had 24 points in the paint, 5 fast break points and 3 bench points.
