GUNNISON, Colo. Fifth-ranked Western Colorado hopes to enjoy its Homecoming Weekend, welcoming Black Hills State University to the Mountaineer Bowl at the Rady Family Sports Complex for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football matchup on Saturday, October 11.
The Mountaineers have won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Yellow Jackets, including the most recent six matchups.
No. 5 WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025 Stats
- The Mountaineers enter Saturday's homecoming game with a 5-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in RMAC play. They are coming off a 49-10 victory at Fort Lewis in which quarterback Josiah Roy threw for 245 yards with four touchdowns.
- Whether it's starting quarterback Drew Nash or Roy leading the attack, the Western offense is averaging 41 points per game, ninth most in NCAA Division II. The passing offense (232 YPG) ranks 56th nationally and the rushing attack (179 YPG) is 43rd.
- Nash's 12 touchdown passes are 16th most among DII quarterbacks, and he ranks 13th nationally in Points Responsible For with 102.
- The defense continues to make things rough for opposing offenses, ranking 15th nationally in rush defense (86 yards allowed per game) and sixth in scoring defense (12.0 PPG).
- Surrendering just 275 YPG, that defense is 13th in DII, a figure aided by sacks and tackles for loss, in which it ranks 7th (3.6 per game) and sixth (9.2 per game), respectively.
- Ian Loomis, averaging 7.2 tackles per game, is seventh in the RMAC, and at 1.2 TLFs per game he and Kade Musser (1.13 TLFs per game) are third and fourth within the conference's defensive rankings.
BLACK HILLS STATE HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025 Stats
- The Yellow Jackets come to the Western Slope with a 1-5 overall record and a 1-3 mark within RMAC play, the lone win a 25-19 victory at Fort Lewis College.
- Though the record isn't exemplary, BHSU's losses have not been blowouts. It dropped its season opener by only six points, then fell 48-36 at Grand Valley State, which was ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time.
- The win over Fort Lewis followed a narrow three-point loss at Chadron State, and two losses since the win have been by just nine and 14 points.
- Wide receiver TJ Chukwurah might be the most dangerous player on the Yellow Jacket squad. He leads the country with 10 receiving touchdowns, is fourth in total points scored (60), sixth in receiving yards (579) and 10th in receiving yards per game (97).
- BHSU has utilized a trio of players behind center, but Luke Duby has been the main man. He's completing 66 percent of his throws (136-of-206), accumulating 1,352 yards through the air, with 12 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
- The defense is led by linebacker Rune Tepolt who has 44 tackles, a figure that include 20 solo stops and 4.5 tackles for loss. Defensive tackle Isaiah Morales makes his way into the backfield frequently, registering 5.5 TFLs and 4 sacks.
