Wallis Hits Nationals Standard as Mountaineers Defeat Mustangs

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado's Alexandra Wallis surpassed one of the scoring standards for the NCAA national qualifying diving meet with her first place on the 1-meter diving board Saturday, as the Mountaineers earned a 165-113 victory over visiting Southwest Minnesota State University.

Wallis, a two-time participant in the NCAA Division II Diving Qualification Meet, won Saturday's 1m (6 optionals) event with a score of 260.75, surpassing the standard of 255.00 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visiting Mustangs won the opening event of the meet, the 200-yard medley relay, but Western immediately bounced back in the first individual event, sweeping the first three places in the 1,000 freestyle.
  • Sophia Del Rosario led the Mountaineer trio to the touchpads, posting a winning time of 19 minutes, 12.85 seconds. Sidney-Ann Morris finished second in 19:46.66, followed by Brionna Thomas (19:56.71) in third.
  • The march ahead of the pack continued in the next event with Morgan Nielsen and Agnieszka Rudomina taking the top two places in the 200 free. Nielsen (2:03.17) edged out Rudomina (2:04.14) by less than one second.
  • The 200 butterfly added another sweep for Western, which took the first four places in the event, led by Adessa Talbot's winning time of 2:17.75.
  • Late in the meet the Mountaineers ruled the 500 freestyle, hitting the pads to take the top five places in the event. Thomas earned the win with a time of 5:31.23, followed by Rudomina (5:35.31), Nielson (5:35.68), Del Rosario (5:37.98) and Morris (5:39.68).
  • Joanna Swiderska, who placed third in the 200 butterfly, captured the 100 butterfly event in 1:01.12.
  • Western's lone double-winner of the day was Leah Wagner. She won the 200 breaststroke (2:31.08) then in the final individual event of the meet, won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:15.76.
