GUNNISON, Colo. It was Senior Day at Katy O. Rady Field for Western Colorado soccer, and the Mountaineers rewarded the senior class Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over visiting New Mexico Highlands University.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western def. N.M. Highlands, 3-0
Records: Western 1-9-3 overall (1-2-3 RMAC), NMHU 1-8 (0-5)
Location: Katy O. Rady Field, Gunnison, Colo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cowgirls were the aggressor early on, pushing hard into its attacking third and getting off the first three shots of the game, and five of the first six shots.
- Western finally gained momentum toward its attacking third beginning with a shot on goal by Cianna Thomas late in the 14th minutes.
- Including Thomas' shot the Mountaineers would press forward and take five of the next seven shots, all five on frame though Cowgirls goalkeeper Marie-France Foguenne was able to keep Western off the scoreboard with saves on each of the five shots.
- The sixth attempt was the back breaker, however, as Thomas found the top, left corner early in the 33rd to put the Mountaineers on top.
- An aggressive run by Jordan Welsh as Foguenne was trying to clear from her area became a turnover. Lauren Kindt pushed a soft pass across the top of the box to Thomas who, receiving the pass in a negative position, spun and opened to her right then rocketed a left-footed shot past her defender and where Foguenne couldn't reach.
- The teams entered the halftime break with Western clinging to its one-goal advantage, having eventually surpassed the Cowgirls in shots during the opening half, 10-9.
- It was Western that came out of the break creating pressure, reeling off the first three shots of the second half, then earning a second goal on its fifth shot.
- A free kick from Western's defensive end quickly became dangerous as Brenna Wolfe pushed a pass into the right side of the penalty box where Tawny Roberts beat one defender to the ball, then fought off a second defender for a cross in front where Natsuki Murakami one-timed a shot to the right of Foguenne to double the advantage near the end of the 57th.
- The pitch remained tilted toward Western's attacking third, momentum that turned into a third goal for a 3-0 edge.
- Kindt collected a loose ball heading into the attacking third and threaded a pass between Cowgirl defenders and in front of a streaking Caitlin Mazurek, who easily raced past the last defender and one-on-one with a charging Foguenne pushed a shot past the netminder and into the right corner.
- Highlands would get off one more shot, off target, allowing Western to pick up its first win of the season.
RADY FIELD NOTES
- Despite Highlands' early advantage in shots, Western would finish with a 23-14 advantage overall.
- Aubree Orosco would finish with a clean sheet for the Mountaineers with nine saves, while Foguenne would take the loss after making 11.
